On this Independence Day in the United States, anyone involved in Metuchen's Global Solidarity Partnership can't help but have their thoughts and prayers turn for a moment in grateful remembrance of the founding Bishop of the Santa Rosa Diocese, Julio Bethancourt, who died on this day in 2006, after shepherding his new flock for ten years.
Bishop Bethancourt, who so eagerly embraced the partnership with Metuchen, met with a delegation from New Jersey shortly before he died in an emotional gathering, despite his failing health.
So on this second anniversary of his death, with a Metuchen youth delegation winding up their tour, Independence Day has more than a little bit of a feel of Inter-dependence Day thanks to Bishop Bethancourt. May he rest in peace!
