On a sleepy, muggy July 4 morning in New Brunswick, up to 50 of an expected 100 delegates filed through deserted streets for the opening of New Labor's first convention.
The gathering, at St. Peter the Apostle's Parish Hall, runs through July 5.
New Labor is the widely-acclaimed member organization, founded by Rich Cunningham with Lou Kimmel in 2000. The organization helps members move ahead through leadership training and organizing for change in their working lives. Through the years, New Labor has expanded its New Brunswick base toward having a greater statewide impact. Organization staff also participate in CCST's Justice for Immigrants Campaign.
From the perspective of CCST, New Labor is an outstanding example of applied Catholic social teaching. In 2004, Rich Cunningham was a national finalist for the USCCB Cardinal Bernardin Award for outstanding young adult leadership in social justice.
New Labor recently received another national grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
