Our solidarity trips and the typical church "mission" trips

In our orientation sessions preparing groups to go to Guatemala -- such as the current Metuchen diocesan youth delegation wrapping up its week in Santa Rosa -- we emphasize how our solidarity approach differs from the typical hands-on, one-time mission trip so often associated with U.S. church groups and Latin America.
Today's Washington Post has a good story on the growing awareness of the costs of these mission trips.
It's encouraging to see that churches formerly engaged in mission trips are moving more toward the solidarity model.
