President Álvaro Colom of Guatemala fired his security chief on Thursday after the discovery of seven unauthorized listening devices and video cameras in the presidential office and residence.
“This is serious,” Mr. Colom said Thursday night at a news conference, according to local news reports, which said soldiers were guarding the residence.
Although an investigation into who planted the devices was just beginning, Mr. Colom, a businessman who took office in January, suggested that organized crime might be behind it.
UPDATE: Guatemala's daily Prensa Libre has more coverage on the incident in Spanish.
Also today's front page from El Periodico, also dealing with the story.
